Northmores provided project management services for the delivery of St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch, an integrated neighbourhood healthcare facility bringing together primary care, mental health, diagnostics, dialysis, prevention services and community wellbeing provision under one roof.
Developed through extensive engagement with local residents, healthcare providers and community organisations, the hub reflects a new model of preventative, place-based healthcare focused on accessibility, collaboration and improved patient outcomes. The building was designed to enable patients to access multiple services within a single visit while supporting stronger links between healthcare, social care and voluntary organisations.
The development includes flexible clinical accommodation, community meeting spaces, a non-profit café and therapeutic landscaped gardens designed to support social interaction, relaxation and wellbeing. Particular emphasis was placed on creating a welcoming, dementia-friendly environment with clear wayfinding, natural light and strong visual connections to external spaces.
Sustainability formed a key part of the project strategy. The building achieved BREEAM Excellent and incorporates heat pumps, rooftop photovoltaic panels, sustainable drainage systems and extensive soft landscaping to reduce operational and embodied carbon. Off-site manufacturing techniques were also utilised to improve programme efficiency and reduce site waste.
The completed facility supports the NHS ambition to shift services away from acute settings and into local communities, helping reduce pressure on hospitals while expanding local healthcare capacity. Early outcomes include increased dialysis provision, expanded GP facilities, reduced waiting times for some services and improved collaboration between healthcare teams.
