Northmores is supporting Whittington Health NHS Trust in the delivery of a major infrastructure upgrade as part of a wider £250m+ transformation programme. The project focuses on modernising the site’s power and energy infrastructure to increase capacity, improve resilience and enable future estate development.
The existing electrical infrastructure required significant upgrade to address capacity constraints and improve long-term reliability. The live healthcare environment added complexity, requiring careful planning to maintain continuity of critical services throughout the works. The programme also needed to align with wider NHS ambitions for decarbonisation and Net Zero Carbon delivery.
Northmores is providing programme and project management across a complex, phased infrastructure programme. This includes increasing site capacity from 1.8MVA to 8.5MVA, installing a new high-voltage cable route from the UKPN substation, and constructing a new UKPN intake.
A new energy centre is being developed to house generation plant, bulk fuel storage and associated infrastructure, alongside the replacement and addition of distribution substations to create a resilient N+1 network. The existing high-voltage network is also being reconfigured to support future developments across the estate, including key clinical projects.
The programme will deliver a significantly more resilient and flexible infrastructure, providing the capacity required to support ongoing transformation of the estate. It establishes a robust platform for future development, improving operational reliability while enabling long-term energy optimisation and decarbonisation.
The programme is being delivered in phases, with key milestones including the completion of a new distribution substation in 2024, installation of new high-voltage infrastructure, and the design and construction of a new energy centre through to 2027.
