The scheme was part new build and part reconfiguration and refurbishment of the existing emergency department, together with a new day surgery unit and helipad.
The new building is made up of a new emergency department with associated ambulance bays and a day surgery unit on the first floor, and a rooftop helipad with direct link into the resuscitation department.
The phased refurbishment in the existing emergency department provides a new clinical decision unit and medical assessment unit. The extension maintains and improves key clinical functionalities and co–locates new walk-in entrances to the emergency department and day surgery with the existing main entrance.
